CO2 emissions on the web

A murb'ed feed, posted more than 4 years ago filed in saving, small, compression, technology, co2, energy, consumption, climate, web, javascript & efficiency.

“Just last week I reduced global emissions by an estimated 59.000 kg CO2 per month by removing a 20 kB JavaScript dependency in Mailchimp for WordPress. There’s no way I can have that kind of effect in other areas of my life.”

Redid the calculations myself and I ended up with a somewhat smaller number (4 times smaller), but the exact number doesn’t really matter. Small savings can add up. Note that these numbers seem to ignore the emissions from building the resources. Depending on efficiency (static sites consume less resources than dynamic ones)
