I chose to work for a company where they were using ruby a lot, because I love working with ruby. I got to know ruby the way many did, via Ruby on Rails, a web framework written in Ruby that at the time was, and perhaps still is, revolutionary. The demo everyone my age has seen is how to create a blog in 10 minutes. These days the creator has created an updated version of it, where he even styles the blog somewhat and deploys it via docker onto a cheap VPS provider.

The problematic part of Rails, however, is its creator. He is a Nazi. He isn’t parading, but if you prefer a white England over a multi cultural one or suggesting to deport all gypsy the way wolves should be shot, you are one.

So here we are now. Perhaps I can neglect the controversies somewhat because he hasn’t contributed to Rails any more since the end of 2025. But even though I might talk about Rails as a tool I like, I wish there were no controversies attached to choosing that…
