AVIF has landed

Jake Archibald demonstrates the capabilities of the new image format AVIF. I’ve always been somewhat underwelmed by WebP, and found that the JPEG compression was just good enough without the hassle. AVIF, however, really shows impressive results…

However: encoding is slow. It can take minutes. And also it doesn’t feature things like progressive loading (not a priority for video codecs).
