I'm just a single person. A music listener and lover, for quite some time. What I was curious about is whether my actual spending on music had changed with the new online options offered these days, most notably since I started using the streaming service Spotify. Artists are complaining, and streaming companies trying to defend their position. So as a user of streaming services, can I still honestly say that I'm a music lover who supports the artists that make it? Luckily I have most of the data that I need to investigate it for myself.
What I used to spend and the revenue.
I own about 150 CD's. It is not a lot, but looking around it seems above average (also compared to my parents collection of vinyl records from the past). I bought most of them between 2002 and 2012. Tijdens de verkiezingen in Iran, en vooral toen de protesten luider
werden naar aanleiding van vermeende misstanden, kleurden vele
gebruikers van het Twitter platform hun avatar, het kleine plaatje naast
hun naam, groen. De kleur van de Iraanse oppositie. Er was zelfs een site die het groen worden vergemakkelijkte.
Vrijheid vind ik een groot goed. En de beperkingen die de buitenlandse
nieuwsgading werden opgelegd was voor mij voldoende aanleiding om te
vermoeden dat er iets mis was. Dus deed ik het ook. De poging tot
revolutie was veel in het nieuws. Maar langzaam staakte het ook weer. Of
de mensen in Iran hadden geen zin of fut meer, of alle communicatie
kanalen waren dusdanig verstoord dat het organiseren van demonstraties
te lastig werd, of de heersende macht had voldoende leiders opgepakt…

About almost a year ago, I decided to buy a Network Attached Storage
(NAS) device. A what? Well, a NAS is essentially a harddisk that is
connected to a network (instead of connected directly to your computer).
My experience with NAS'es, however, is not the primary reason for
writing this post. I wanted to share with you my
process of buying the NAS device.So what did I do?I made a list of interesting devices. Based on reviews, based on
names I've heard, that matched my primary criterion: a dual hard drive
solution (configurable as RAID 1 (two harddrives in one device, that are
exact copies of each in case one disk fails)) with a network interface.
As energy isn't free either (and a NAS is at least idle 24x7) and I'm
not reckless when it comes down to the effects of energy consumption on
our planet, I took energy consumption into account as well.
